Calling Time on the Open Season

November 9, 2012

Only a quick little blog this time, as I just thought Plas Newydd closing for winter was worth a mention. On Wednesday we shut our doors on the open season and began to turn our thoughts to winter, to the deep clean of the house and our Christmas Events.

At our end of season meeting today we looked back on the events of the summer, most of which I was unfortunately not here for. It was great to see what went on at Plas Newydd this summer, with the frisbee-golf course opening and 50 things to do before your 11¾  activities. I am sad that I wasn’t here for some great events, like the Diamond Jubilee celebrations that saw Plas Newydd host a “Strait Party” and make it onto national telly. However, I did arrive in time to be involved in Conservation Week and the Spooky Cellars, and I have very much enjoyed by experience of the open season here.

The winter will also be a very exciting time here at Plas Newydd. We met our team of winter conservation volunteers yesterday, who all seemed very enthusiastic about getting involved with giving the house a good old clean. We aim to clean every room in the house from top to bottom. It is very satisfying to think of each room getting a complete clean; however, as we clean we are more concerned with updating condition reports and removing dust to prevent pests from moving in than with making everything look all sparkly, but sparkliness is of course always nice. There are also other winter projects, such as cataloguing our military collections, which should unearth some fascinating items. If there is time we would also like to check the condition of our books, and with an MA in Victorian Literature I am of course a great lover of old books, so that would be a brilliant project for me.

I want to be involved in as much as possible this winter, and I will keep a record of it all in this blog. Good times are ahead.
